Crossroads Care Surrey* is a charity that provides free short breaks to support unpaid carers across Surrey.
What is a Carer?
A carer is someone who looks after a friend or relative with a significant illness or disability, ranging from a parent with dementia to a child with cerebral palsy. There are over 100,000 unpaid carers in Surrey, many of them on call for '24/7'.
How does Crossroads help Carers?
We provide trained staff to take over the caring responsibility whilst
carers take a break.
Anna who has cared for her parent with both physical and mental disabilities for over 15 years describes the difference the breaks have made to her life -
"Crossroads enables me to experience normality for a few hours each week. The knowledge that you have two hours to go shopping, take a walk, go to bed, sit in the garden, whatever, makes you feel like other people- just for a while."
While providing the breaks to carers we also provide meaningful activities to
the person with care needs, e.g. we take an autistic boy rock climbing, and an
elderly lady with dementia to feed the swans in the park. We also run social
clubs, Care Café for carers and people with dementia, and Saturday clubs for
children with disability and complex care needs.
